ReadReveal: Reading Practice That Builds Confidence for K-8
ReadReveal is a K-8 reading-fluency app that turns reading practice into a discovery game. Readers watch a story illustration reveal as they practice aloud, type along, or tap to listen. Hosts can choose uploaded images, playful emoji patterns, or optional generated artwork. The app scores accuracy, rate, and prosody in real time using DIBELS and Hasbrouck-Tindal benchmarks, then delivers a Webb's Depth of Knowledge comprehension quiz. Teachers, parents, and tutors host free Reading Rooms.

How does ReadReveal work?
- A teacher, parent, or tutor creates a free Reading Room and shares a short class code.
- Students join with the code and a nickname. No email or login is required.
- The student picks a passage (curated library, AI-generated, or Bring Your Own Book via photo OCR / audio).
- They read aloud (Mic), type along (Type), or tap to listen (Tap) and watch a story illustration reveal as they read.
- After reading, they take a Webb's DOK comprehension quiz with optional text-to-speech.
- Teachers and parents review fluency trends in the dashboard or a shareable parent progress report.
How does ReadReveal measure fluency?
ReadReveal transcribes student audio with OpenAI gpt-4o-mini-transcribe and scores three dimensions standard in oral reading research: accuracy (percent of words correct), rate (words correct per minute compared to Hasbrouck-Tindal grade-band norms), and prosody (phrasing and expression). Results stream into the teacher dashboard with per-student trend lines and class summaries.
Is ReadReveal safe for kids?
ReadReveal is built privacy-first. Students never enter an email or real name; they join with a teacher's room code and a nickname or auto-generated reader name. Guest sessions use ephemeral tokens, so no persistent identifier follows the student. AI-generated illustrations run through safety fallbacks. Native iOS and Android builds add a parental gate, disabled external links, and local fonts to meet kids-category app store rules.
Evidence and standards
ReadReveal's fluency scoring and passage leveling are grounded in published reading research:
- Hasbrouck-Tindal Oral Reading Fluency norms (Hasbrouck and Tindal, 2017): the WCPM benchmarks ReadReveal compares each student against. See readingrockets.org oral reading fluency norms.
- DIBELS 8th Edition (University of Oregon Center on Teaching and Learning): the assessment family ReadReveal's accuracy/rate/prosody triad mirrors. See dibels.uoregon.edu.
- Webb's Depth of Knowledge (Norman Webb, 1997): the cognitive-rigor framework used to calibrate comprehension quiz items across recall, skill, strategic thinking, and extended thinking.
- Fountas and Pinnell text leveling: used as a guidance system when ReadReveal generates or recommends passages by grade band.
What makes ReadReveal different from other reading apps?
Traditional reading apps separate engagement (games) from assessment (tests). ReadReveal brings them together: readers watch a story illustration reveal as they practice, while hosts can follow fluency and comprehension progress. Hosts can choose uploaded images, emoji patterns, or optional generated artwork for the reveal.
Frequently asked questions
What grade levels is ReadReveal for?
Kindergarten through 8th grade. Passage difficulty is leveled with Fountas and Pinnell guidance, and quiz items are calibrated against Webb's Depth of Knowledge framework.
Does ReadReveal work in languages other than English?
Yes. ReadReveal supports 14 languages for both the user interface and passage translation, powered by Google Gemini with a permanent cache for speed.
Can I import my own books?
Yes. The Bring Your Own Book feature accepts a photo of a printed page (OCR) or an audio recording of the text. Readers can then practice with the imported passage and take a comprehension quiz. Hosts can use uploaded images, emoji patterns, or optional generated artwork for the illustration reveal.
How do teachers track progress?
The teacher dashboard shows per-student accuracy, words correct per minute, prosody, comprehension scores, active reading time per mode, and badge progress. Parent progress reports are shareable with a token-protected link and include AI-generated narrative insights.
Is ReadReveal free?
The core Reading Room is free with a capped class size and illustration credit allowance for optional generated artwork. Paid plans (Home Reading Room, Solo Tutor, Tutoring Center, Institutional) raise those limits and unlock team admin permissions and advanced analytics. Web subscriptions are billed through Stripe; mobile purchases go through RevenueCat.
